First completed miniature of 2013
Posted by pae on March 29, 2013
I finally finished one of the two gift miniatures a couple of weeks ago, and it has reached its new home in Poland. It was painted for the Chest of Colors miniature exchange, and my recipient was the guy who has organized each one of them.
As usual, I had a hard time deciding which figure to paint, but in the end I decided on Isabeau Laroche from Reaper. I knew the Polish flag was red and white, so I was going with that for the overall color scheme (though the cloth is really ivory rather than white, since white is a rather difficult color). I also wanted to do a bit of freehand, so I spent a while drawing random designs in a sketchbook until I came up with something I felt comfortable with.
For the shield, I wasn't sure what I wanted to put on it, but my lovely wife came up with the brilliant idea of using the Polish coat of arms. I tried to replicate it as closely as I could at such a small scale, and since Nameless (the recipient) recognized it, I guess I accomplished that goal.
The water effects here were done with EnviroTex Lite pour-on high gloss finish. I added a little bit of paint to it for color, but it's otherwise pretty easy to work with. I also sculpted a few lilypads (poorly).

Happy 2013

Apparently we survived (yet another) apocalypse, so I suppose I should update this site again. For the last several months of 2012, I didn't do much painting at all, but toward the end of the year, I did pick up the brushes again. Even though I haven't finished anything recently, I'm enjoying what I'm working on. I have two things going right now that are going to be gifts, so I really don't feel like I should post any WIPs. However, there are two figures that I just added to the gallery that I painted for Freebooter in late summer of 2012. Those weren't released until just this week, so that's why they didn't go into the gallery until now.
For 2013, I'm not making any real painting related goals, other than to try to be more consistent about it. And maybe try to keep the figures bought:figures painted closer to 1:1. But there's so much cool stuff out there that I keep telling myself that I want to paint.
Breaking the Silence

It looks like it has been two months since I posted anything new here on the site (and I know I've gone for much longer stretches without posting anything), but that doesn't mean I haven't been doing any painting. I did paint a figure for the WAMP Freebooter contest, and it took second place. It's in the gallery if you want to see it. Also, I started working on one of the Bones figures for Reaper, but it's not finished yet. I also have two other figures that I'm working on for a client that I need to have finished by the end of this month. I just have been very remiss about posting any pictures of anything.
I was working on a WIP blog of the Freebooter figure that I painted for the WAMP contest, but I stalled out a bit on it. I took a lot of pictures, but I stopped writing about halfway through. I need to get back to finishing that up. Again, I seem to be lacking in followthrough on those types of things.
I will be teaching a couple of classes at Tacticon up in Denver on 8/31-9/1, so if you are in the area and are looking to pick up a few pointers on blending or non-metallic metal, that's where I'll be. If I have anything at all to enter into the contest there, it will be something that I've already finished, since I won't really have time to knock something out in the next two weeks.
Until next time...(which hopefully won't be another two months from now)
Another completed miniature

I started work on this one about a year ago, but had a few stretches where I made no progress on it at all. But now it is finished, and I'll be sending it down to Reaper in the very near future. I was trying to emulate the work of Michael Proctor on the base, and for once I think it turned out fairly well.
Next on the agenda will be to work more on some of the other projects I have in progress, and probably starting some of the large pieces that I received from Reaper, and perhaps something from Freebooter for another contest at WAMP.
End of May

The two figures that I posted in the last update are still not finished, but two others that I hadn't even started then are finished. Check the gallery for pictures of the Cthonian Larva and Shae.
I should get back to work on the dwarf for Reaper, since it is so close to being finished, and also because Ron Hawkins has sent me a half dozen or so larger figures (including two dragons) to work on for them. Looks like I'll be getting some more use out of the airbrush.
Also, the Wamp contest in June is for Freebooter miniatures, and if you look through my gallery, you might notice that I've painted a bunch of stuff that was sculpted by Werner Klocke (the man behind Freebooter). So I know I'll be able to find several things that I could be highly motivated to paint for this contest. The trouble may be in choosing just one or two (or three).
